Keeping You Comfortable

Wisdom teeth, or your final set of molars, erupt in the back of your mouth during your late teenage years or early twenties. Because they erupt last, there may not be enough space in your mouth for them. When this occurs, they will become impacted, trying to push up through your gums but being unable to due to a lack of space. If left untreated, you may experience pain or even damage neighboring teeth.
Our team has the experience and expertise to provide the most comfortable, state-of-the-art care. If you or your teenager has concerns with your wisdom teeth, we can evaluate them and perform an extraction if we feel that it is necessary. If you or your teen are having troubles with your wisdom teeth, it may be time to remove them. You’ll be in good hands with the team at Boardwalk Dental.

Do I Need A Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

The only way to find out if you need a wisdom teeth extraction is to have a consultation with us. During your appointment, we will inspect the full jaw structure and area around each tooth. Depending on the size, positioning, and development of your wisdom teeth, we can determine if an extraction is best. It is our priority to make you feel informed and confident before making any decisions.
Rest assured that when an extraction is needed, you will be anesthetized fully. You will not feel any pain. However, it is common to feel pressure or pushing. The tooth is loosened from the jawbone and is gently rocked out of place. After removal of the tooth, a blood clot forms in the socket and gauze is placed in the mouth for you to bite on to stop the bleeding. If stitches are needed, they usually dissolve on their own.

Why do I need to remove my wisdom teeth?
On top of causing headaches, toothaches, and facial pain, wisdom teeth are susceptible to infection and can cause misalignment of established teeth. We find that many of our patients have teeth that have become overlapped or crooked after wisdom teeth emerge and then require further orthodontic treatment.
Also, keeping wisdom teeth for extended periods can lead to gum issues and gum disease. Because of their location in the mouth, they are difficult to clean and keep clean. Periodontal (gum) disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in adults and is very harmful to oral health.
